SBGC Newsletter | March 2019

Stateline Boys & Girls Clubs
Beloit, WI & South Beloit IL

Dear Supporters

Dear Supporters,

Last month was the beginning of a New Year and Mother Nature has not disappointed us this year. Cold weather brings school and club closures, and make us mindful of how we do things. We as a staff and organization got together and shifted our thought process. In the past, we have always taken cue from the school districts and closed when they closed due to weather. We have come to realize that this may also cause an additional burden to our members and families. Starting this month, we will be open during the day when schools are closed due to weather on a case-by-case basis. We will certainly err on the side of caution and if the weather is too extreme, we will close. This also goes in line with an old club motto, “when school is out, clubs are in.”

Congratulations to our 2018 SBGC Youth of the Year Katherine Elizalde. She was the organizations winner and will now go on to compete at the State competition in March in Madison, with hopes of advancing to National competition in Orlando! Very proud of you Katherine.

As always, thank you for all of your continued support of our clubs and our kids! Together we are helping to provide GREAT FUTURES for the youth of the Stateline Area!

Thanks for all you do,

Mark Rand | Chief Professional Officer - Stateline Boys & Girls ClubMark A. Rand

Congratulations to our Youth of the Year!

Katherine is this year’s Stateline Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year. She is 15 years old and is in the 9th grade attending South Beloit High School. Katherine’s favorite class is art. She loves that she is encouraged to be creative and try new mediums in art class. She also really enjoys how wacky her art teacher Mr. Eckburg is. Outside of school her favorite thing to do is watching movies. Her favorite movie is The Odd Life of Timothy Green. She loves how it encourages people to dream and gives the feeling that even the craziest dreams could possibly come true. After school Katherine is involved in Drama Club. She loves joking around and being silly with her friends, they have many laughs while in Drama Club. As of right now, Katherine is still searching for her “dream career”. Katherine is hoping that by going to Hendricks CareerTek and taking her CR classes she will be able to figure out what she is most passionate about. If she could tell todays youth one thing she would say everyone should try to focus on staying in school and graduating. School is the key to starting a successful life and finding out what you are most passionate about.

Welcome Emily Peterson!

My name is Emily Peterson and I’d like to introduce myself as the new Director of School-Aged Programs. I started with the Club in January after spending the past 8 years teaching Preschool, Kindergarten, and 5th Grade in area schools. I have a passion for children and am honored to be a part of an organization that does so many positive things for youth in our Community. Currently, we are in the process of getting our Beloit location licensed with the State as a child care center. In addition to increased safety, better quality programming, and more opportunities for youth engagement, meeting these regulations will allow us to provide programming to children who may not otherwise be able to come to the Club for financial reasons. The ability to pay for child care at the Stateline Boys and Girls Club in Beloit using the State of Wisconsin child care subsidy program (WI Shares) should be available for those who qualify starting Summer 2019. Please feel free to contact me for more information at 608-365-8874 or epeterson@statelinebgc.org. Stay tuned for further information and make it a phenomenal year! See you at the club!
